Big Deal

Today total darkness that’s cast by the moon
Will cast a wide shadow and block out the light,
Although by the clock it’s not much beyond noon.
It’s rare and not many have seen such a sight.

We’ll sit on the patio, watch it get dark.
Our little dog Lucy I’ll hold in my lap.
Perhaps in the neighborhood some dogs will bark.
I’m guessing that Lucy will just take a nap.

I judge from the hype this is something quite rare.
Some big celebrations are causing a stir.
It’s all over the news to make sure we’re aware
Of the hour and minute when it will occur.

For thousands of people there’s quite an appeal.
I guess it’s my age, but ask, “What’s the big deal?”
