How Long

December 23, 2023

“How long does it take you to write a new rhyme?”
Is a question I’m asked, and they mean, “How much time?”
I’d say half an hour to write and compose,
But a lifetime to form all the thoughts that arose.

Each rhyme that emerges begins in the heart.
It’s birthed in my spirit, that’s where it must start.
The seed begins sprouting, takes shape in my head,
Then forms into words that are written and read.

“Why write them as poetry, why not in prose?”
I’m partial to rhythm and rhyme I suppose.
Like the waves of the ocean, the ebb, and the flow,
Like the wind through the treetops, the leaves how they blow,

The words that take shape as they reach for the sky,
Find their lyrical rhythm for soaring on high.

Christmas Draws Near

December 23, 2023

Another Christmas Eve draws near,
A mixture of memories, children, and cheer.
The children with their eyes aglow
Hear stories of Santa, the reindeer, the snow,

But also, Jesus born that night,
The shepherds, the wise men, the stable, the light,
The star, the angel, Mary, child.
The scriptures we read every year bring a smile.

The heavens opened in the sky.
The shepherds heard thousands of angels on high.
A child who came from God above,
Who came as a sacrifice born to bring love.

Take time to pause and pray and sing,
Remember the Christ child, the savior and king.

Christmas Birth

December 21, 2023

God sent His Son that Christmas night
To earth to bring His holy light.
A virgin birth that God conceived,
The shepherds came and they believed.

Inside a manger on the hay
Amid the animals He lay.
A humble start for One so grand.
He came to kneel, obey, not stand.

This time He chose a simple stall.
He’ll come again as Lord of all.
Every nation, tongue, and creed
Will take a knee, to Him concede.

That Lamb of God for us was slain.
A thousand years He’ll rule and reign.

Reluctant to Share

December 18, 2023

I’ve found myself writing my usual fare,
But reluctant to post what I’ve written. Why share?
I don’t know the reason for holding back words.
I guess I still wonder, “Has anyone heard?”

I’ve shared from my heart, written hundreds of thoughts.
Two years of devotionals seldom are bought.
Perhaps it’s old fashioned, traditional rhyme;
Have timing and rhythm grown old past their prime?

I’ll likely keep penning the words that I find,
As I share from my heart, let the rhythm unwind.
Perhaps what I’m writing is meant just for me.
Is it really important to let others see?

If I share what I write and then just a few read,
Perhaps it’s enough to touch someone in need.

Angel’s Wings

November 30, 2023

What a joy to have my poem, Angel’s Wings, in the December issue of Starlight Magazine, a Christian magazine for children ages 5-10.

StarLight considers it a pleasure and privilege to share their joy for shining God’s truth through children’s literature. They endeavor to introduce, enhance and encourage all young people through their quarterly magazine and monthly printables bonus.

Through the Pain

November 30, 2023

My wife knows pain she’s persevered.
I’ve tried to help but failed, I fear.
So many doctors, meds, and drives,
They too have failed to help her thrive.

I guess some people must endure.
Some ailments still don’t have a cure.
How do folks learn to live with pain?
It’s something that I can’t explain.

It’s strength that’s buried deep inside.
It’s where our faith in God resides.
God promises His love and grace,
In Him we find a resting place.

I pray your pain won’t last too long,
And through it all you’ll hear God’s song.

Shared Memories

November 28, 2023

Perhaps it’s more than deep in thought,
More prone to pensive than I ought,
It seems that at this time of year
Old memories draw close and near.

My friends of old from days now past
Left images that linger, last.
I miss those friends, those days of old,
More precious now than stacks of gold.

The love that we can leave behind
To touch another heart and mind
Will linger long beyond our years,
Shared memories, both joy and tears.

I’m blessed by time I spend with friends.
Those memories will never end.

Compassion

November 28, 2023

A word, a smile, a warm embrace
A gentle touch upon the face
Conveys a warm and loving heart.
The feeling lasts, won’t soon depart.

Compassion comes from deep inside,
That place where peace and joy abide.
And when it’s shared then it will grow,
By words and deeds that love will show.

I pray when shared that love will spread,
Reach to the heart, not just the head.
May love and light this time of year
Dispel the darkness, hate, and fear.

Compassion comes from God above,
The one, the only source of love.

A Time to Share

November 26. 2023

Perhaps you will gather with family and friends,
Or perhaps at a table of strangers this year.
No matter your state or the place you are in,
I pray you are grateful for what you hold dear.

It’s not about fortune or fame or control,
But learning to love and to share and to give.
By giving to others, you’ll find in your soul
A joy and a peace as you learn how to live.

Thanksgiving the focus is mostly on thanks,
But the giving is also important to do.
It’s often ignored, second place in the ranks.
It’s not about money but sharing time too.

Find time to be thankful and give from your heart,
Find ways to reach out, you have much to impart.
