Strength for Now

January 1, 2024

I do my part, I work, I pray,
But know I’m not the one in charge
Of all the things that come my way,
Most moments small, but some loom large.

Sometimes events seem out of place.
I ask the Lord, “Is this Your plan?”
If up to me – rewind, erase.
Eventually I understand.

At times when going through a trial
It seems I’ve lost my way somehow.
The uphill climb will be worthwhile.
Lord give me strength I need for now.

My faith, dear Lord, is all I bring.
Your love provides the joy to sing.

Another Year

December 31, 2023

Lord thank you for blessings I’ve known through the year,
Thank you for family and friends I hold dear.
I’m grateful for words I’ve been able to share
As a way to help others know Your love and care.

Thank you for others who help me to grow,
Provide words of wisdom that sparkle and glow,
Who lift and encourage on days when I’m down.
They’re building up treasure with jewels in their crown.

I’m grateful for places my words can be read,
For hearts that can listen and hear what is said.
I pray that the year brings new places to serve.
Lord help me stay active, not merely observe.

Lord help me to listen and hear what You say,
And follow Your footsteps as You lead the way.

Blessings and Light

December 30, 2023

As I look through the pages, the book of my life,
I can see all the blessings that God sent my way,
And also, those times that God helped me through strife.
I grateful dear Lord, help me cherish each day.

In life I’ve known good times, they outweigh the bad.
You’ve always been with me, You’re there in my heart.
I’ve cherished Your presence since I was a lad.
One day I’ll be with You, this body depart.

I’m grateful You’re with me, I follow, You lead,
Those times through the valleys and also the peaks.
You’re my light in the darkness, You know every need.
You give me the peace and the joy that I seek.

I pray as I share with the words that I write,
That others will see and be drawn to Your light.

Neighborhood New Year

December 28, 2023

It’s a joy to be part of this place where we live,
A sharing community willing to give
A smile and a howdy to folks that we greet,
And eager to welcome new neighbors we meet.

At Christmas the neighborhood’s festive with lights,
A welcome addition on cold winter nights.
Reach out to the neighbors you’ve not met before,
Perhaps make new friends that you’ll come to adore.

For almost a decade this place we call home
Has given us time to sink roots and not roam.
We wanted a place that had folks young and old,
A mixture of phases of life to unfold.

It’s a pleasure to live here and see children grow.
From toddlers to teens children never go slow.
It’s hard to imagine that children once small
Are now so mature going out to the mall.

Although we’re less active we wanted to say,
“We’re blessed in this neighborhood, cherish each day.
We’re grateful for neighbors and friends we’ve made here.
We pray you are blessed, have a happy new year.”

Never Old

December 24, 2023

It’s Sunday morning Christmas Eve
We celebrate a baby’s birth.
Eternal life if we believe
God sent His Son in love to earth.

A manger for a royal king,
A stable for the Son of God,
The shepherds heard the angels sing,
A humble birth where cattle trod.

Just as the prophets’ words foretold,
In Bethlehem, a star shown bright.
The story’s fresh and never old.
The angels sang that holy night.

For centuries year after year,
The story’s shared we love to hear.

Those Who Grieve

December 24, 2023

It’s early morning Christmas Eve,
I lift a prayer for those who grieve.
I pray God’s everlasting love
Pours over them from up above.

As we remember Christmas Day,
God sent his gift of love our way.
We shed our tears, our cheeks are moist,
Yet lift our songs of praise, rejoice.

We miss the ones we loved who’ve passed,
But know they’re with the Lord at last.
God’s love and peace is all around,
Their joy is real and has no bounds.

I pray God’s love begins to heal
The hurt, the sadness some may feel.

How Long

December 23, 2023

“How long does it take you to write a new rhyme?”
Is a question I’m asked, and they mean, “How much time?”
I’d say half an hour to write and compose,
But a lifetime to form all the thoughts that arose.

Each rhyme that emerges begins in the heart.
It’s birthed in my spirit, that’s where it must start.
The seed begins sprouting, takes shape in my head,
Then forms into words that are written and read.

“Why write them as poetry, why not in prose?”
I’m partial to rhythm and rhyme I suppose.
Like the waves of the ocean, the ebb, and the flow,
Like the wind through the treetops, the leaves how they blow,

The words that take shape as they reach for the sky,
Find their lyrical rhythm for soaring on high.

Christmas Draws Near

December 23, 2023

Another Christmas Eve draws near,
A mixture of memories, children, and cheer.
The children with their eyes aglow
Hear stories of Santa, the reindeer, the snow,

But also, Jesus born that night,
The shepherds, the wise men, the stable, the light,
The star, the angel, Mary, child.
The scriptures we read every year bring a smile.

The heavens opened in the sky.
The shepherds heard thousands of angels on high.
A child who came from God above,
Who came as a sacrifice born to bring love.

Take time to pause and pray and sing,
Remember the Christ child, the savior and king.

Christmas Birth

December 21, 2023

God sent His Son that Christmas night
To earth to bring His holy light.
A virgin birth that God conceived,
The shepherds came and they believed.

Inside a manger on the hay
Amid the animals He lay.
A humble start for One so grand.
He came to kneel, obey, not stand.

This time He chose a simple stall.
He’ll come again as Lord of all.
Every nation, tongue, and creed
Will take a knee, to Him concede.

That Lamb of God for us was slain.
A thousand years He’ll rule and reign.

Reluctant to Share

December 18, 2023

I’ve found myself writing my usual fare,
But reluctant to post what I’ve written. Why share?
I don’t know the reason for holding back words.
I guess I still wonder, “Has anyone heard?”

I’ve shared from my heart, written hundreds of thoughts.
Two years of devotionals seldom are bought.
Perhaps it’s old fashioned, traditional rhyme;
Have timing and rhythm grown old past their prime?

I’ll likely keep penning the words that I find,
As I share from my heart, let the rhythm unwind.
Perhaps what I’m writing is meant just for me.
Is it really important to let others see?

If I share what I write and then just a few read,
Perhaps it’s enough to touch someone in need.
