Leaves

March 12, 2021

I hear the wind blow through the trees
To strip the last remaining leaves
Now brown and brittle from the freeze.

The leaves now separate from the tree
Begin their journey floating free.
Where will they go? What will they see?

The leaves now free must find their way,
And choose the place where they will stay,
Enrich the earth as they decay.

The trees now nourished from the earth
Will sprout new leaves and give them birth,
As well as grow in height and girth.

The leaves that sprout and grow each spring
Provide the place for birds to sing,
And shelter chicks beneath their wings.

They give us shade from summer heat,
A place to gather, visit, eat,
Where grass stays cool beneath our feet.

When summer heat begins to ease,
We feel some coolness in the breeze,
A bit of color in the trees,

We know that autumn’s almost here,
That special glowing time of year,
When leaves announce that winter’s near.

Once more the cycle starts anew.
The sun, the sky, the morning dew,
All mark the days as years accrue.
